Grill’d Wintergarden — Brisbane CBD

Brisbane Bites Recommendation:

Grilld Wintergarden — Brisbane CBD

For the uninitiated, Grill’d is a burger institution originating from Melbourne that specialises in ‘gourmet’ burgers. Their marketing is progressively chic in its use of nifty catchphrases, and 1950s stylings combined with art-house cartoon graphics. Over the last few months they have been expanding aggressively in Qld and we visited the Wintergarden store, which is the latest addition to the fold.

Brisbane Bites Recommendation:

The setting is delightfully modern with an industrial feel and the décor carries a dark warm tone throughout. Seating is compact but not cramped and the table settings are very casual. Further out towards the Queen Street, there is a verandah-like area balcony opening onto the mall.

We attended Grill’d Wintergarden during the diabolical office lunch hour and being a newly opened venue the place was heaving with people! As the atmosphere was a-pumping, this did affect the service time, however it was still adequate.

What we Liked

The ‘Simon Says’

chicken, avocado, bacon, lettuce tomato, Spanish onion, relish and herbed mayo on a Panini bun. Tasted exactly as you would imagine, the ingredients were fresh, crisp and flavoursome.

Brisbane Bites Recommendation:

The ‘Baa Baa’ burger

lamb, avocado (just a thin smattering), cheddar, lettuce leaf, relish and herbed mayo on a sesame whole meal bun. Again, tasted just as expected with no surprises here.  Personally, I would have like my bun toasted and though they do offer the choice of bun when you order, I should have insisted on having it toasted it at the same time…

Chips

these were delightful: crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside! They were coated in a lightly herby salt, which made them all the more savoury. My only complaint is that we only ordered a small serving and I had to eat mine quickly

Our Thought

Brisbane Bites Recommendation:

With the average burger priced around 11.50, the value for money is fair when compared with the other ‘gourmet’ burger joints (Burger Urge $12 and Purple Gorilla $13). When you’re using fresh ingredients and the taste is much on a par with competitors you’ll need to fall back on other traits to determine which one is for you. Personally, I think Grill’d is my pick of the bunch based on location (the new Wintergarden fit is pretty awesome and in the centre of everything), service and the chips(!).
