Looking out from the deck of South Bank Surf Club I can see through the night to the edge of the shore, albeit a man made one. There are sporadic glints of light off the water which could perhaps even be reflections of the moon, should I allow myself to forget my urban surrounds.
Together with the wind rustling through the passionfruit vines trellised along the railings, patio heaters and the spiced apple cider upon which I sip, I am provided with a feeling of warmth that is more reminiscent of a summer night on a nameless Australian coast rather than a June evening on the busy South Bank Arbor.

Imagine this…In the midst of a chilly winter’s evening, one is served a steaming dish of hearty medium-rare venison on a bed of creamy spinach-streaked potato mash. There is a distinct game-y taste, yet at the same time on the palate it exudes a hint of spicy peppercorns which is nicely complimented with sweet red-wine onions and the bitter-sweet, velvety texture of…savory chocolate sauce?

Beef, chicken, lamb, pork and the occasional roast duck from China Town…That was pretty much the extent of my childhood culinary exposure when it came to eating meat. However, during my late teens I ventured out to Switzerland up in the alps for a language exchange and my host mother was definitely a fan of what I would consider “non-traditional” meats.

The clock reads 10:30AM. There are plenty of people around. This surprises me, especially for being a Sunday morning. However, above the murmur of excited individuals I hear the clanking of glassware and smell the musky aroma of smoking wood-fire chips.
Last weekend (31/03/2012), The Brisbane Bites team attended the inaugural “Enrich Brisbane – Life, Food & Wine” show which was hosted at the Brisbane Convention Centre.
